Frank Luca is a classically trained fine artist and tattoo artist at Vatican Tattoo Studio in Delray Beach, Florida, with over 20 years of professional tattooing experience.
Born in Meriden, Connecticut, Frank demonstrated a natural talent for artistic expression from a young age recognized by family and teachers alike, and awarded as early as middle school. He began his college career at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999. At UM, he studied art history and digital art forms while simultaneously apprenticing in tattooing a rare combination that laid the groundwork for a uniquely well-rounded career.
Following graduation, Frank worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for a publishing company, a scenic artist for an international event production company, and in art departments on film and television sets. He has created murals for private homes, exhibited in galleries across Miami and Connecticut, and had his work displayed at the 2006 Orange Bowl Halftime Show. He is perhaps best known to a wider audience for his appearance on Miami Ink, the hit TLC series.
In January 2026, Frank celebrated his 20th anniversary as a professional tattoo artist. He tattoos full-time at Vatican Tattoo Studio in Delray Beach while dedicating his personal time to oil painting and airbrushing.

((I keep forgetting to post…)) this month marks my 20th YEAR OF TATTOOING!! And what a wild and fun ride it’s been so far… ((minus the major cervical spine surgery last August thanks partially to abusing my body doing what I love 😹😹😹)) Not too many people know I actually started tattooing 30 years ago while in college at University of New Haven. I decided to apply to my dream school, University of Miami in April for the fall. If I didn’t get accepted, I was going to quit school and continue tattooing. I got accepted in 4 weeks, so it changed my whole path in life and I packed my bags and headed to Coral Gables, FL. Long story short, I became a Correction Officer… then Graphic Designer… then Mural Artist… then back to Tattoo Artist 10 whole years later!! It’s been a blast working and learning from some amazing artists/ coworkers/ friends by my side. And equally exciting tattooing and spending time with each and every one of my great clients new and old!! ((…I won’t bring up the couple of shitty ones 😹😹😹)) These last 20 years have allowed me to tattoo so many family and friends and even my friend’s kids who I’ve known since they were born… wild to fathom!! All over the country from CT to FL to CA. Around the world to Italy and Switzerland to Canada and even to Cuba 2 times!! I hope I have at least 20 more years in me!! What’s up my peeps!! Happy Sunday!! If you haven’t already heard, I got cleared from my spinal surgeon and I’M BAAAAAA-ACKKKKKKK!! and tattooin’ again with my good ol’ pals at @vaticantattoodelray !! Been warming up a lil with some smaller projects to see how the neck feels and I’m ready to start tattooing big projects again!! BIG or small… any style!! He fought for the US as an Italian citizen, which he was later granted his American citizenship. #Vietnam #NavyCross recipient. “In 1967, during the Vietnam War, Luca carried four wounded members of his Marine platoon to safety under heavy fire. Luca was given numerous recognitions for his bravery and for saving the members of his platoon despite being wounded in the process. My little slice of heaven. I wanna live in here sometimes!! 3.5 years and still going in my custom @ikeagreenhousecabinet @ikeausa Milsbo tall cabinet!! Lots of trial and error in the beginning. But with lots of help from friends and lots of research, everything is growing great and thriving. There’s even 2 clean up crews of a now large rubber ducky isopod colony and springtails. I’ve had to chop everything up top 2 times to clean it up. And you can even see my Anthurium Sp. Limon has finally matured into a double lobe. I believe they get tri-lobes at full maturity. It’s been naughty 2x and grown through the cork pot where the A. Friedrichsthalii narrow is growing 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ 😆😆😆 Quick appearance by @gambit.thedoxie and a new painting by @mila.hoshino on the wall 😁😁😁
Amazing long weekend having my family here n having a bunch of friends around for @internationalaroidsociety #tropicalplantexpo ! Hung out with my sista @nancylucacom with @brassbonanza n my cousin Natalie. MamaLuca did some cooking. Went to the casino. Went to the @aroidgreenhouses party. Visited some greenhouses with @jiggyplantguy @poisonivyplantlady @mkebeers @torafloraplants . Went to the show n saw a bunch of my peeps. Saw a bunch of healed tattoos that I’ve done. Got to see my design come to life with STRIPEY the mascot at the show. Had a blast with all my peeps and all the positive vibes… now I’m gonna sleep for a week!! 😴😴😴
Cervical Spine Surgery 8/20/25 730am update:: Hey everyone who has kept up or maybe has not known.. I had anterior (front) and posterior (back) spinal surgery on my neck yesterday that was long overdue. Possibly degenerative. Possibly from traumatic head injuries. Possibly from 18 years of tattooing in crazy positions with bad posture. And also “tech neck “ from being a graphic designer/ illustrator and being on these stupid phones!! Here’s the simple breakdown/ cliff notes:: Surgery went well. It was a 5 hr surgery. Larger incision down the back of my neck. Shaved the insides of 6 discs with ultrasonic tools to give my spinal cord more room and cause less damage. And one fusion in the front at C3-C4 to fix the issue of my severe right arm nerve path pain and numbness. And help stop the spinal cord damage from possible head injuries ((being a dumb kid, playing football in HS 1994//motorcycle accident 2011// bicycle accident 2021. And to possibly help prevent the breathing nerve path from getting compromised next. But wanna send a huge LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU for all you have done to help me everyday to my partner in crime and rock Norma @brassbonanza …My surgeon Dr. Cantor in FTL and all of his wonderful team… The crew at West Boca Medical Center ICU… and all of my badass friends who have supported me along this journey. THANK YOU ALL
*Currently sore as hell and in a bit of pain. They told me to get ready for the roller coaster of extreme pain in 72 hrs when the drugs wear off. 2-3 weeks for the pain to get better. 3 months to heal enough to go to gym / pool / PT. I will definitely start tattooing/ working again in Nov/ Dec!! But until then, l`m not allowed to drive or work!! Please be patient with me and I`ll throw them awesome tattoos on you once again as soon as I can!! Thank you for your patience!! And come visit me cuz be bored!! ((Plenty of time to start painting again once I can sit up!! So be on the lookout!!))
