Meet EV Talesman of Vatican Tattoo in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to EV Talesman.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was fascinated with tattoos at a very young age. I always knew I wanted to have tattoos, but never imagined I would ever be able to tattoo for a living. I started to work in tattoo shops when I was in college, which eventually led me on the path I’m on today. Getting an apprenticeship was not an easy task, so I had to get in where I could. I started an apprenticeship at one of the first shops I worked at, and after about a year or so, I could tell it wasn’t going anywhere. At that time, my best friend and fellow tattooer, Megan Fernandez, offered me an apprenticeship with her. I quit my day job and moved two weeks afterwards to Panama City Beach, FL to learn how to tattoo. I have and will forever be grateful to her for mentoring me. I’ve since moved back to South FL and have been tattooing for almost nine years. Tattooing is truly one of the most rewarding careers.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. A lot of people ask me how to get into tattooing, and I always respond that if it’s not 100 percent their passion, they should not pursue it. It takes a long time to learn how to tattoo, and you basically have to sacrifice a lot of your life in order to do so. Even then, nothing is guaranteed, and you have to work very hard to build up your clientele and make connections. There were times when I was apprenticing that I felt helpless and like I would never actually touch a tattoo machine. Being a woman in this industry can be tricky as well. I feel very lucky to work alongside people who respect me, that I consider family.

Please tell us about Vatican Tattoo.
I currently work at Vatican Tattoo Studio in downtown Delray Beach, FL. I have been here since we opened the shop in November of 2016. I specialize in traditional tattoos and anything that is bold, classic and will stand the test of time. I am most proud and grateful for the wonderful people I work with and for the amazing clients we have. I’ve met so many amazing people through tattooing. I think when you come to our shop, there is an overwhelming feeling of acceptance. We genuinely care about each and every one of our clients and in creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for them. This is not the typical intimidating environment that some tattoo shops can be. People from all walks of life, whether they’re an avid tattoo collector or your grandma, can come in and get a tattoo they will be proud of.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
We did a lot of traveling as a family when I was younger, and to this day each and every one of those trips is so memorable. One of my favorites was when we went to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was winter, and we stayed in a beautiful cabin on a mountain. My sister and I still have inside jokes to this day. Family is very important to me, so anytime we could spend together has always been cherished.
